News from Ek Zuban & Teesside Literature Development
February/March 2011
Ek Zuban and Teesside Literature Development have been commissioned by Middlesbrough Borough Council to run a series of workshops, site visits and creative activities to encourage Middlesbrough residents to engage imaginatively with the Anish Kapoor sculpture 'Temenos', and to create a book of poetry, short prose, photography and illustration inspired by the U.K.s largest public sculpture.
Temenos is a sculpture designed by Anish Kapoor for the Tees Valley Giants project and is situated in the Middlehaven area of Middlesbrough which contains the site of the Albert Dock and was once the major gateway to the town for sea and river traffic. The sculpture is approximately 110m long and 50m high, it was completed in Spring 2010.
Temenos is a piece of land cut off and assigned as an official domain, especially to kings and chiefs, or a piece of land marked off from common uses and dedicated to a god, a sanctuary, sacred grove or holy precinct.
Temenos is a word Carl Jung adopted as a metaphor for the internal psychological and spiritual space where healing takes place.
